The Town of Greenwich officially opened the doors to the new Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center, a long-awaited transformation of a beloved 1950s facility that could no longer keep pace with the needs of its vibrant and growing community. The ribbon cutting ceremony marked a milestone in civic investment, celebrating a building that is both rooted in local history and designed for future generations.

The new Civic Center offers a flexible, multipurpose environment for a wide range of community programming—from athletics and classes to concerts, dances, and outdoor events. The design honors the natural character of the site while bringing a contemporary vision the space.

During the ceremony, First Selectman Fred Camillo reflected on the community’s decades-long efforts to replace the aging facility and highlighted the significance of public investment in shared spaces. Parks and Recreation Director Joe Siciliano spoke to the department’s excitement about expanding programming and access for residents of all ages. Superintendent of Building Construction & Maintenance Luigi Romano recognized the collaborative effort that brought the project to life and expressed pride in delivering a high-quality space for the community.

The 20-acre parcel sits at the intersection of Rosa Hartman and Binney Parks, bordered by mature trees and protected wetlands. Design priorities included preserving the existing tree canopy, integrating natural stormwater strategies like bio-retention basins and porous paver parking, and maintaining the green buffer between public space and surrounding neighborhoods.

The building's form and materiality draw inspiration from the movement of water, referencing the nearby Long Island Sound. A focus on durable, low-maintenance materials ensured that the facility could meet the community’s daily needs while remaining sustainable for town maintenance teams.

Inside, the program includes a two-court gymnasium, activity rooms, a community lounge, kitchen, and classrooms, along with a playground and outdoor gathering areas. Every space is designed to adapt easily to a variety of public uses—from youth basketball leagues to senior programs to town-wide celebrations.

As the community gathered to cut the ribbon, walk the new halls, and explore the grounds, the moment reflected the significance of the space for the community. Years of planning and collaboration have resulted in more than a new facility but a new civic anchor for Eastern Greenwich.
