Built in 1950, the well-loved facility could no longer support the community's needs. The new Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center has flexible spaces for games and events, such as athletics, dances, concerts, picnics, crafts, classes, and exhibits. The design is reminiscent of the water movement reflective of the nearby Long Island Sound. Preserving community character and green space is essential.
The 20-acre parcel has natural wetlands at the nexus of Rosa Hartman Park and Binney Park and a wealth of mature trees, creating a visual screen. The site will utilize bio-retention basins and porous paver parking areas to protect wetland soils and natural vegetation. With limited custodial resources, materials were selected for aesthetics and durability—program: Two-court gymnasium, activity rooms, kitchen, lounge, playground, and outdoor gathering space.
