The new Philip G. Coburn Elementary School is designed for 705 students in grades Kindergarten through 5th plus six sections of Pre-Kindergarten. Educational program spaces support different modalities of learning, individual and group instruction, physical activity, long-term projects, discussion, and problem-solving, collaboration between pupils, and for group presentation. The 119,800 sq. ft. school has been designed to be flexible in order to accommodate future needs. Classrooms are clustered by grade level and special education spaces are available through the school.
"On Dec. 9, town officials, architects, the general contractor, current West Springfield school faculty, and former West Springfield students gathered on the green behind the century-old Coburn school to host a groundbreaking ceremony for a new chapter in the school’s history."
