The new State Street Elementary School project has reached a significant milestone with the topping-off ceremony. This event symbolizes the completion of the building’s structural framework, a key step in the construction process, and highlights the efforts of all those who have worked to bring the project to life.
Construction on the new school began in late 2024. Students continue to occupy the existing building until the new facility is completed in 2026. Once finished, the old 1955 building will be demolished to make way for parking and additional recreational spaces.
As part of educational facilities upgrades approved by Westerly voters in 2022, the new State Street Elementary School will offer a modern, biophilic design with three wings surrounding an outdoor courtyard. The energy-efficient building features large windows, a pollinator garden, and bioretention swales, while its interior, centered around a two-story learning commons, reflects Westerly's coastal identity.
This topping-off ceremony marks just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting and transformative project for Westerly's educational landscape and community!
