TSKP is excited to share the vision for The Worcester Art Museum (WAM) Arms and Armor Galleries, set to open in 2025. WAM’s vast collection is one of the largest in America, second only to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, with over 1,000 pieces. With additional square footage, 16-foot high ceilings, and an innovative open storage system, the museum will display nearly its entire collection. Unlike previously where a select number of objects could be displayed.
The galleries will be physically and intellectually accessible for all visitors. The arms and armor collection is from medieval and Renaissance Europe and adorned with pieces from diverse cultures such as Greece, Egypt, Japan, and India. Each corner invites exploration, from dramatic displays in the front gallery to behind-the-scenes views of open storage in the rear gallery.
The installation offers hands-on activities and new technology to provide detailed information about stored items. Engaging maps and special demonstration events will enhance the visitor experience. The galleries' design also ensures comfortable seating, allowing guests to explore at their own pace.
TSKP x IKD, in collaboration with Jeffrey L. Forgeng, the Higgins Curator of Arms and Armor and Medieval Art at WAM, and Museum leadership, designed the galleries to provide an inclusive and immersive gallery experience. The team also provided building system upgrades, façade and window replacement, temporary exhibitions, lighting system upgrades, and art handling and collection storage relocation.
