TSKP STUDIO designed Connecticut's first four “Net Zero” public schools. Net Zero is a term for buildings that generate as much energy as they use over the course of a year and will be achieved for the new Mansfield, Buckley, Bowers, and Keeney Elementary schools. Although new construction is typically associated with Net Zero projects, we have found that renovation projects such as our Buckley and Bowers Elementary School projects can also be Net Zero and use far less embodied carbon than all new construction.
With a projected Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 18.1, Buckley Elementary School is currently to be renovated like new and will be completed for the Fall 2022 school year. Design focused on providing a tight envelope, high-performing building systems, and renewables such as photovoltaics and a geothermal wellfield. Buckley Elementary School will accommodate 400 students in grades K-4. The project required 55,000 sq. ft. of renovation and a 9,000 sq. ft. expansion to allow for additional classrooms and specialized spaces for special education, art, music, and STEM.
The design also creates a new prominent main entrance featuring a solar flower to create a learning opportunity and highlight the school’s Zero Net Energy goal.
