TSKP STUDIO designed this new 74,450 SF school in a neighborhood isolated from the adjacent central business district.
The former school consisted of a series of unconnected structures distributed into the community so that students moved from one building to another. The new school integrated community services, and was oriented to the take advantage of the inspirational city skyline. The u-shaped structure creates the semi-enclosed and securable courtyard, providing a safe and protected area for recess and outdoor education. Additionally, the school faces Main Street with a 5,920 SF library which incorporates the local branch of the City library. The glazed curtain wall along the library space fills the library with natural light and invites the community to the adult activities of the evening and afterschool.
In 2001, this design received the Architecture in the Community award from the American Institute of Architects Connecticut Chapter, which commented on the skillful blend of programs to maximize community resources and bring adults into the learning community. For this project TSKP STUDIO won the AIA Connecticut Design Award.
