The town of Wilton recognized that their existing PK-2nd grade facility, an accumulation of additions going back to the 1950’s, was in need of an overhaul. TSKP STUDIO's approach to the project was to strengthen the school’s identity, by establishing a clear main entry and internal organization, while simultaneously creating intimate settings within the school appropriately scaled for the younger student population. Classrooms are clustered around break-out spaces which receive natural light from new clerestory windows above. The roof of each break out space soars above the typical roof line and is color-coded to match the cluster. This allows a student approaching the school by car or bus to be able to recognize their cluster within the building. Viewed from the exterior, the colors of each cluster roof look like kites and are arranged in the order of a rainbow.

This new addition also expands the outdoor learning courtyard, which is newly appointed with a koi pond, vegetable gardening raised planters and an accessible amphitheater. The PK program, relocated to the lower level, has its own identity distinct from the larger school with its own main entrance and parent/bus drop-off. This PK program connects to the rest of the school via a daylight filled ramp, allowing younger students to move between the different floor levels to access other program areas without the need to navigate stairs.
