This 50,000 sq. ft. school for kindergarten through fourth grades was designed to replace two outdated schools with one new building. In design, every effort was made to create a small scale building that is comfortable for small children. The design makes the most of the sloping wooded site. While it is one story at the front elevations, the land slopes down, allowing full window exposure to two stories of classrooms, at the rear of the building.
The school's exterior is a composition of elements found in a child's drawing of a traditional school: a clock, a bell tower, a pitched roof and a covered entrance. The main entrance opens into the central spine of the school, which resembles a New England covered bridge. With a pitched wood ceiling and generous skylight, this central spine is the main street of the building: the library, the two-story gymnasium and office all open onto it, gaining plenty of natural light from its skylight. The Kindergarten rooms are located on the first floor at the front of the school. Each has its own smaller scale entrance, separated from the main entry to the school. For this project TSKP STUDIO won the AIA National Medal of Honor.
