This independent co-educational day school commissioned TSKP STUDIO to plan and design a new 27,000 SF academic building for grades 9 – 12.
The facility's program invovled state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory planning for biology, marine science, chemistry, physics, earth science, and math as well as preparation and storage rooms and a greenhouse for students to observe and learn about plant species and sustainable environments.
The building achieved LEED Gold Certification and incorporates sustainable design elements such as a high albedo roof; sharing of an exterior wall with the existing gym, which reduces energy loss; energy efficient HVAC systems, occupancy / natural light sensors and daylight dimming controls. Protection of natural resources is achieved through: water conservation fixtures inside and non-invasive native plantings outside to reduce irrigation needs; and preservation of old-growth trees reducing solar heat gain and cooling requirements. For the project, the architect, TSKP STUDIO, received the CT Green Building Council Honorable Mention Award.
