Located on the western edge of Hartford, the project was an essential component of the neighborhood’s revitalization.
TSKP STUDIO expanded and restored this historic brownstone train station into a commercial and multi-modal transportation center totaling 88,000 SF. The original structure was restored and repurposed providing a social hall in the old Great Hall, with commercial office space on the mezzanine level. Underneath the existing Amtrak rails a new 10,000 SF passenger service/ticketing area, which contains all transit-related services, features a lightwell from the tracks above and provides handicap access on both sides of the track.
Restoration work included: restoring the terra cotta roof tiles; recreating canopies for the front entrance and the south wing pavilion reminiscent of the original ornamental steel designs; restoring and reproducing the chandeliers and waiting room seats of the Great Hall; and repairing and painting the original decorative plaster work.
For this project, TSKP STUDIO won the Federal Railroad Administrative Award. The client structure and regulatory agencies included: the Federal Transportation Administration, the Urban Mass Transit Administration, Amtrak, ConnDOT, the Greater Hartford Transit District, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Connecticut Historical Commission and the Commission on the Arts, and the City of Hartford.
