This pedestrian Bridge, designed with Macchi Engineers, is the final link of a two-decade program by Riverfront Recapture to restore access to the Hartford riverfront.
The Bridge provides a highly visible pedestrian gateway to and from the Riverfront Plaza and Parks system. A sculptural superstructure towers over the Bridge, making it a gleaming landmark for the new Riverfront and for the City. It is reminiscent of the rigging of an old schooner, appropriate to the nautical history of the area, substantially enhancing the City’s skyline. The cable-supported superstructure, with 57 and 64-foot-high stainless steel clad towers, rests on a 130-foot span. Innovative strategies were required to ensure no excessive deflection or displacement in the cables, and to erect the angled towers efficiently.
