This was one of the first embassies to be completed in the 21st century, moving embassies and Foreign Service facilities out of urban centers into completely new secure compounds. The challenge was to avoid the design of a self-contained fortress, and to create a warm and welcoming campus that properly reflects the spirit of democracy, and is appropriate to the culture and environment of the host country.

The scope of work entailed master planning a 21-acre site and design for Phase I construction of a 75,000 sq. ft. Chancery, and support buildings encompassing (Marine Security Guard Quarters, GSO, Motor Pool, Warehouse/Shops), totaling an additional 40,000 sq. ft. The design represents a fresh interpretation of Tunisian architecture, using a variety of local stone and custom designed tile, while still meeting critical requirements for security. Both site and structure employ strategies of sustainability appropriate to the climate of Tunisia.
