In 1994, The Rectory School commissioned TSKP STUDIO to develop a master plan for campus improvements. The planning process clarified the need for new and renovated residence halls, a few renovated instructional spaces, and new space for school assembly and the performing arts programs. In order to make way for a new arts center/auditorium, an outdated dormitory needed to be torn down and replaced in time for the 1998-99 academic year. TSKP designed an intimately scaled complex of two residence halls providing a total of 28 single occupancy student rooms and four faculty/family apartments. The schedule for occupancy inspired the utilization of customized prefabricated modules that were assembled on site like an old fashioned barn raising. The on-site finish details tie the buildings into the intimate residential scale of the campus. The use of the modular construction with on-site foundation and finish work reduced the construction schedule by four months and the cost by more than $250,000.
