Once the Town had determined that an existing school needed to be demolished due to the build up of mold and unhealthy air quality, TSKP STUDIO was engaged to design the new school to house approximately 490 K-5 students on the same site. Site planning had to accommodate both the new school and the existing until occupancy of the new allowed for demolition of the old.
The new 73,425 SF school is two stories high with alternating facades of red brick and a white composite stone, achieving a vibrant New England look reminiscent of white clapboard houses and red barns. The rear of the building, with views of the preserved wetlands on site, feature bay windows and comfortable interior nooks for the students. With a welcoming covered arcade in front, and a well-lighted “main street” corridor, the design provides a simple organizational plan for young children and visiting parents. The corridor is akin to a New England covered bridge.
