The new Lyons School building will provide the space and physical resources needed to engender skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.   The new school will enable the District to take a big step forward toward realizing its goals of equity, academic excellence, and project-based learning and to provide a full inclusion experience for all students.  The new school will support 405 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and include the District-wide Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) program.  The project addresses overcrowding at the current Lyons school.

The proposed building massing is civic in scale, and reflects the use of the building by the community as well as by the students.  The building massing places the gymnasium in the forefront because it is an asset that both the school and community will utilize.  The interior of the building carefully opens larger spaces on the first floor, such as the gymnasium, cafeteria, and media center, to after-hours access by the public while keeping academic areas secure.  The proposed location is accessible via public transportation, making it a desirable destination for public use.

Building systems will have a service life of up to 50 years and use at least 20% less site energy than the current energy code would require.  It will achieve a LEED silver rating (or higher) under the USGBC’s LEED for Schools rating system.

The new school will be built on the former Devine School site. Working with Randolph’s Historical Commission, this project will preserve historic and culturally significant artifacts of the former Devine School and display them in the project, reconnecting the community to these elements of value.
